A Rustle of Dark Leaves:
Tales from the Shadows of the Forest
Edited by Inanna Gabriel
This project is now CLOSED to submissions and is in the editing stage.
For this anthology, I want dark stories set in the forest. It can be anything from a tropical rainforest in Brazil, to a jungle in the heart of Africa, or a state park in the U.S.A. As long as your characters are surrounded by lots of trees, they're in the right place.
As far as content, I want dark, but that doesn't necessarily mean just straightforward horror. Nothing wrong with straightforward horror, of course, but I'm also very open to fantasy and even SF and literary if you can make it work. Basically, I want you to draw me in and enchant me. I want to be caught up in your story like I'm lost in the very forest its taking place in.
The setting is pretty much my only requirement for this anthology. I will give a bit of advice and warn writers that killer trees and man-eating plants aren't likely to be accepted, so you probably don't want to waste your effort on those. Other than that, though, I'm anxious to see whatever you can come up with!
For the nuts & bolts, see Misanthrope Press's general guidelines page--there's nothing special or nonstandard for this anthology. Project specifics are:
- Submission open April 1, 2011 and will be open through May 31, 2011. Initial (shortlist) responses will go out by the end of June, with final responses out by the end of July.
- Word count: 1,500-5,000 (I can be flexible in either direction, but query first if you're outside this range)
- People who've submitted to me before will be shocked by this one, but I might be interested in a very small amount of poetry. Payment will likely be less than for fiction, and query first. Unsolicited poetry submissions will not be considered; I do, as a general rule, still hate the stuff.
- Send submissions as attachment to submissions (at) misanthropepress.com. The subject line on your email should be Forest Anthology: Your Name/Story Title ***THIS FORMAT IS VERY IMPORTANT, AS WE HAVE MULTIPLE OPEN PROJECTS AND NEED TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOUR SUBMISSION IS INTENDED FOR!***
- You will receive an autoresponder confirmation as soon as you submit, and then a personal confirmation from an editor. If you followed all guidelines and do not receive a personal confirmation within two weeks, please query.
- Anthology will be published simultaneously in print and e-book form.
Payment and Terms:
- First North American Anthology Rights & First Electronic Rights
- $5.00, paid upon publication (see above; if any poetry is included, payment will likely be less)
- Rights revert back to author upon publication
- Planned publication is late 2011
